On the first Sunday of Advent the purple candle is lit. The first candle is often called the “Prophecy Candle” and is lit in remembrance of the prophets who foretold the birth of the “Christ child”.
Today, on the second Sunday of Advent, the second purple candle is lit. This candle typically represents love. In some traditions this candle is called the “Bethlehem Candle,” symbolizing Christ’s manger:
“And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.”” Luke 2:12 ESV http://bible.com/59/luk.2.12.esv
Love comes across our paths often in unexpected ways. Are we open to the possibilities that the Christ child brings?
